What Happens When God Forgives Your Sins
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” – Romans 5:1
When you put your faith in Jesus Christ and ask Him to forgive your sins (with a firm resolution to forsake them), they will be instantly forgiven in their entirety. You will pass from spiritual death to eternal life. Jesus said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him (God) that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from (spiritual) death unto (eternal) life” (John 5:24).
Passing from spiritual death to eternal life means that you are in a justified state before God. You are no longer condemned for your sins, because they are forgiven. You now have eternal life. You are at peace with God. He has reconciled you to Himself (Romans 5:10). You are adopted into God’s family by His Spirit, the Holy Spirit. “. . . ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15b; NOTE: Abba means Father in another language.)
You are born again of the Holy Spirit (John 3:1-7). This is a spiritual birth. You are now spiritually alive. “And you hath he quickened (made spiritually alive), who were dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1). You have an inner assurance from the Holy Spirit that you are a true child of God. “The Spirit itself (or Himself) beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” (Romans 8:16). NOTE: You should at this time be baptized with water as soon as possible as a sign of your new life in Jesus Christ and as a testimony to it (Matthew 28:19).
It is God’s will that you, as a born-again Christian, be perfected in holiness. “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it” (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24). Yield yourself wholly to God and ask Him to sanctify you wholly (entirely) and believe that He will do it. If you live according to the truth of God’s Word, the Holy Bible, the blood of Jesus Christ will keep cleansing you from all sin. “But if we walk in the light, as he (God) is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth (present tense) us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).
