The people which (who) sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which (who) sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. – Matthew 4:16 (KJV)
The final effects of sin will cause the sinner to “sit” in spiritual darkness. The sinner does not realize that there will come a time when his (or her) sins will completely dominate his life. He will “sit” in “the region and shadow of death.” He will not be able to free himself from his sins.
Yet his case would not be hopeless if he sees the “great light” that God had provided for him in the Person of His Son Jesus.
Jesus said, “Whosoever committeth (commits) sin is the servant of sin” (John 8:34). The sinner is a slave to his sins. Jesus also said, “If the Son (Jesus) therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).
Jesus died a sacrificial death a long time ago for the sins of all people. But Jesus rose from the dead because death could not keep Him under its power. The living Jesus will forgive the sins of anyone who truly wants their sins forgiven. New spiritual life will come with His forgiveness that can free the sinner from his (or her) sins. This new life will come from God’s Holy Spirit, who will live in the newly forgiven Christian.
You may ask the living Jesus to forgive your sins and be your Lord and Savior right now. He wants to help you.
